Previously only available on premium gold coins, the 2016 Australian Silver Kangaroo 1-ounce bullion coin gives patrons the opportunity to procure an engraving of Australia’s iconic marsupial in 99.99% silver. The Australian Silver Kangaroo is the first silver coin from the Perth Mint to be produced with a purity of .9999. It holds a face value of 1 AUD and is legal tender in accordance with the Australian Commonwealth Government’s Currency Act of 1965.
The coin’s weight, purity, and content are guaranteed by the State Government of Western Australia, and it has an unlimited mintage until the end of 2016. The Australian Silver Kangaroo coin is a component of the Perth Mint’s Annual Australian Bullion Coin Program, which celebrates Australia’s diverse wildlife through depictions of its prominent native creatures: the kangaroo, the kookaburra, the koala, the platypus, and the lunar year monkey.
First recognized as a symbol of Australia in 1773, the kangaroo was officially included in Australia’s coat of arms in 1908. Since its discovery on the island continent, the kangaroo has been widely associated with Australia. The worldwide fascination for the creature has consistently been captured in the Australian Gold Kangaroo bullion coin since 1986, but until 2016, there has not been a silver counterpart.
The kangaroo is the mainstay of the Australian Silver Kangaroo’s reverse. The power behind the leaping kangaroo’s 30-foot bound is proudly demonstrated before a fully risen sunburst on the 2016 silver coin. The kangaroo engraving is immaculately detailed, capturing the coarse and wooly texture of its fur. Within each sun beam is an inward dip that further insinuates the varying rays of the natural sun. The design is a rendition of Dr. Stuart Devlin’s classic red kangaroo design pictured on the Australian Silver Kangaroo. His goldsmith and jeweler expertise were that of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. There is no mistaking the creature presented on the coin’s reverse as its title, “Australian Kangaroo,” boldly arches above its depiction. Underneath, the coin’s specifications – mint date, weight, purity – are presented: “2016 1 Oz 9999 Silver.” The “P” mintmark is engraved to the right of the kangaroo portrait, establishing credibility as a Perth Mint issued coin in the traditional way. The reverse also features an additional counterfeit protection in the form of a micro-laser engraved letter “A” within the first “A” of “Australia.” It is only by magnifying glass that the security detail can be viewed by the human eye.
Sculptor Ian Rank-Broadley’s effigy of Queen Elizabeth II graces the obverse of the 2016 Australian Silver Kangaroo bullion coin. His right-facing portrait of Her Majesty at 70 years old is realistically regal. On a textured circular frame surrounding the effigy is “Elizabeth II,” “Australia,” and the coin’s face value, “1 Dollar.”
