Reverse of 2021 American Gold Eagle CoinObverse of 2021 American Gold Eagle Coin

The American Gold Eagle, an official gold bullion coin of the U.S., has officially been released for the mint year of 2021. Authorized by the successful passage of the Gold Bullion Act of 1985, the coin was first introduced into circulation in 1986. The U.S. Mint’s annual coin is strictly comprised of gold mined in the U.S., containing one troy ounce of 91.67% (22 karat) gold that is combined with an alloy of 3% silver and 5.33% copper to enhance its durability.

The purity, weight, and content of the IRA-eligible American Gold Eagle bullion coin are guaranteed by both the U.S. government and the U.S. Mint. The 1-ounce American Gold Eagle bullion coin holds a face value of US$50. The face values for the 1/2-ounce, the 1/4-ounce, and the 1/10-ounce Gold Eagles are US$25, US$10, and US$5.

Based on the design of the Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle, a $20 gold coin produced by the U.S. Mint from 1907 to 1933, the obverse depicts an inspiring scene of Lady Liberty. Set to the backdrop of a beaming sun, Lady Liberty strides forward as she proudly holds high a flaming torch, symbolizing enlightenment, in her right hand. Signifying peace, an olive branch is held firmly in her left hand. The mint year is inscribed within the sun’s rays on the right-hand side of the scene, and small depiction of the U.S. Capitol is visible in the bottom left corner. Arched in a semicircle across the top of the coin is the word “Liberty,” spelled out in bold capital letters. Fifty stars surround the perimeter of the obverse, representing all 50 states in the U.S., a design that has been modified from the 1907 design with 46 stars and the 1912 design with 48 stars.

Sculptor Miley Busiek designed the American Gold Eagle’s reverse, which illustrates a beautiful scene among a family of eagles. A male bald eagle is captured in the midst of descent toward his nest, where his mate and her hatchlings wait patiently for the gift he holds in his talons – an olive branch. The country of origin, “United States of America,” is boldly inscribed across the top of the reverse, while the coin’s specifications are written below: “1 Oz. Fine Gold ~ 50 Dollars.” The iconic U.S. motto “In God We Trust” is written in space directly right of the mother eagle, and the phrase “E Pluribus Unum,” which translates to “out of many, one,” is proudly placed in the space underneath the flying father eagle.

The 1-ounce American Gold Eagle is 32.7 mm in diameter and 2.87 mm thick.

The 1/2-ounce American Gold Eagle is 27 mm in diameter and 2.15 mm thick.

The 1/4-ounce American Gold Eagle is 22 mm in diameter and 1.78 mm thick.

The 1/10-ounce American Gold Eagle is 16.5 mm in diameter and 1.26 mm thick.
